The Primordial Abundance of He: An Update
نویسندگان
چکیده
We include new data in an updated analysis of helium in low metallicity extragalactic H II regions with the goal of deriving the primordial abundance of He (YP). We show that the new observations of Izotov et al. (ITL) are consistent with previous data. However they should not be taken in isolation to determine YP due to the lack of sufficiently low metallicity points. We use the extant data in a semi-empirical approach to bounding the size of possible systematic uncertainties in the determination of YP. Our best estimate for the primordial abundance of He assuming a linear relation between He and O/H is YP = 0.230± 0.003(stat) based on the subset of H II regions with the lowest metallicity; for our full data set we find YP = 0.234±0.002(stat). Both values are entirely consistent with our previous results. We discuss the implications of these values for standard big bang nucleosynthesis (SBBN), particularly in the context of recent measurements of deuterium in high redshift, low metallicity QSO absorption-line systems.

Improved He I Emissivities in the Case B Approximation
We update our prior work on the case B collisional-recombination spectrum of He I to incorporate ab initio photoionization cross-sections. This large set of accurate, self-consistent cross-sections represents a significant improvement in He I emissivity calculations because it largely obviates the piecemeal nature that has marked all modern works. A second, more recent set of ab initio cross-se...
متن کاملIs Primordial 4 He Truly from Big Bang ?
Population III stars are now believed to contribute to the observed Near Infrared Background (NIRB) and heavy element pollution of the intergalactic medium. Here we show that a Pop III contribution to the primordial He abundance consistent with NIRB constraints, might mask a lower value for the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) He abundance.

متن کاملThe BBN Manifesto
The status of big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) as a cornerstone of the hot big bang cosmology rests on the agreement between the theoretical predictions and the primordial abundances (as inferred from observational data) of the light elements deuterium (D), helium-3 (He), helium-4 (He), and lithium-7 (Li). The strength of BBN is that it is a testable theory: from its beginings in the late 1940’s,...

UMN-TH-2106/02 TPI-MINN-02/21 astro-ph/0207583 July 2002 Recent observations by Bania et al. (2002) measure He versus oxygen in Galactic H II regions, finding that He/H is within a factor of 2 of the solar abundance for [O/H] & −0.6. These results are consistent with a flat behavior in this metallicity range, tempting one to deduce from these observations a primordial value for the He abundance...
